We are trying to keep our rising 3rd grader from forgetting how to do everything during the summer but she balks at the idea of doing too much school work at home. This however, keeps her interest. She earns stickers after each activity to put on a map of her progress. My favorite part is that it mixes up the subjects so that when she does 3 or 4 pages back to back she gets some social studies, math, reading, science, writing, etc, not just 3 or 4 pages of the same subject.I don't think she is going to learn anything new in this book, but at least she won't forget what she knows.

My 8 year old son is typically not a fan of doing worksheets and it is a struggle (and a negotiation) to get him to do 1 or 2 at a time. Having said that, I am so impressed and thrilled with this book. He finished an entire section in one sitting in the hour before bed - which is usually the worst time. Section one is 9 pages, the most he’s ever done at once. He loved that he earned a “badge” after each page. He even gushed how he loved the book and I should buy more of them. We’ve also purchased the Summer Bridge books in the past which are good, but maybe too vanilla. He enjoyed the fictional aspects (space exploring mixed with facts) in this book. Two thumbs up, will be buying more of these in the future.

My elder daughter loved the first BrainQuest we got for her and to make her parents proud, the benchmark tests at her school came with a result indicating that her current skills are at a third grade level. Considering that she had just completed first grade, we were not ready to get the third grade stuff straight away and hence we decided to buy this work book for the transition. We are so happy about the results. This workbook does give a smooth transition between two grade levels. (My daughter was already doing Grade 2 workbook even though she was in First Grade.). This book was able to strike that delicate balance between having enough difficulty that the kids are serious about it and not too difficult to scare them off. If your kid's current proficiency is at Grade 2 level and if you are transitioning to Grade 3 level, this is definitely a good addition.One minor issue is this - this is a generic workbook for different subjects. So, if your kid is at a skill level of Grade 4 in say, reading but math is at Grade 2, then she might find the reading sections a bit too easy. But that is a part and parcel of any common workbooks. If you are buying it specifically for any particular subject, may be look for a focussed workbook.

PERFECT!! This is the third time I have done summer workbooks and these summer brain quest ones are perfection!! It's just a little bit to keep the brain juices flowing. One or two simple tasks each day. It's not like the ones that try to get your kid to a level where the next school year is pointless. It's not so boring that the kids cry and pack their things and run away to join the circus (*cough* Summer Bridge *cough*). I have three levels and they all match up to grade level very well (the Summer Bridge books were WAY off!). The sticker map is fun for all ages - I have one going into 2nd, one into 3rd, and one into 5th. They all appreciate how this book was made to be enjoyable!!! I think it seems a little silly to my 10 year old, but he is just grateful they're not as awful as previous books. There is much more in here than we need since their summer is only 9 weeks long and I give them the first week of summer off as well as the week we were travelling and weekends. But my little one does extra work just because it's so fun and she wants to complete her map!

Great way to beat the summer brain drain. My kids do 5 pages a day before the television is turned on. Work hard, play later...every day.

I'm an ESL private tutor, and I just finished this book with a 5th grader who just moved to the US. The math was far too easy for him, but it was still important to review all the math vocabulary with him, so he will know how to recognize the words on English-written math tests in school. Everything else was perfect for his English level (he has studied basic English in public school in his home country). He enjoyed going through the book, especially the science and all the space stuff. We had a lot of fun working together and he's now excited to tackle the next level up. I really enjoy using this series for teaching ESL, as well as supplementing it with my own material. Even science pages cover important vocabulary and terms the kids do not know, but need to know. I recommend going through the book with the student, if used for ESL, to make sure they understand all the instructions and actually learning from the activities. Really great book and series!

My daughter requested that I got this for her when I ordered her other summer workbooks. Yep, I'm the mean mom who makes my kiddo do the extra work to ensure that the summer slide is not happening here! We have done the regular Brain Quest books for the upcoming year (Kindergarten one was done the summer before kindergarten, 1st grade book the summer before 1st grade ... etc etc), as well as the Summer Bridge Activity Books (I think they started last summer, bridging 1st and 2nd). She saw this one as I was pulling up the normal Brain Quest and she requested it. What kind of mom would I be if I didn't encourage her learning curiosity??I just asked her to give me a review and her 7 year old response was: "Too cool! I'll do it again next year because it was awesome and fun!" ((She finished it off today and was excited to have all of her stickers awarded!))

Obviously every kid is different, but I found the one that was leveled for my sons actual grade was way too easy for him, so we swept through it very quickly and moved on to the next level. Overall love the activities though, as a former teacher I appreciate that it's not all busy work, it's engaging and motivating. The map system is great - though I do wish the daily stickers were a little bigger, they're quite difficult to get off and work with (they're about the size of a pencil eraser).
