If you’re reading this review, like you, I love a good book. Some good books take effort and time to get up to speed with the storyline and characters. Even subsequent works by authors I’ve previously enjoyed. Not this book! “Where the night never ends” envelops you instantly into the cast. Well written factually of its time and setting, this book gives you a “behind the counter” sense of the pathos and struggle not always evident in the historicity of a story.Thank you Annette for sharing your gift and talent with us once again.

Annette Oppenlander's newest book is a compelling read-couldn't put it down. Her characters are more than believable as you get caught up in their lives, and the twists and turns keep going until the end. Five stars for yet another of her books.

Its 1924 and after losing her mother in a freak accident Sam has no one to turn to and no home. Sam is left homeless and no money and nothing to her name but her father’s gun.Sam has a brother Angelo but he went on a business trip several months ago and has not returned. Sam thinks something has happened to Angelo otherwise he would have come home. With nowhere to go or a home to return to Sam decides to go to Chicago to look for her brother. On her journey she meets a young man Paul, a hobo. Sam tellsPaul her plan to look for her brother, Paul decides to go with Sam to Chicago as it is dangerous for a young woman to travel alone. Yeah I think Paul is starting to have feelings for Sam and wants to keep her safe or maybe he just doesn’t want to lose contact with her. Before long Sam and Paul are caught in raid and arrested. Sam is sold to brothel. Sam once again finds herself trapped and alone. Sam has no plans of being a prostitute and makes plans for her escape. Once she figures out how to escape she will look for Angelo and Paul. It’s not going to be easy to find two guys in a town as big as Chicago. Obstacle after obstacle pops up and gets in her way of looking for her men folk. Wherever Sam goes trouble finds her. The harder she tries to move forward the more it seems as if some force is knocking her back one step at a time. But the harder she is pushed the harder she pushes back.Sam is a very strong person and no matter how hard life keeps trying to bring her down she will always get back up and keep on trucking. She has a very big heart and everything she does is for someone else and not herself.Where the Night Ends is a warm heart felt story that will pull you deep into its world and leave you with all sorts of feelings. Sam’s story had me crying, feeling sad and sometimes it had me feeling so mad I just wanted to reach inside the book and give a few people a shake or two or maybe even a punch in the face. But I will have to say by the end I was doing a happy dance in my head. Some people just get the short end of the stick just because of their status in life but deserve so much more and are probably richer than the richest person in the world.Where the Night Ends is not the first book by Annette that I have read and hopefully it won’t be the last. Annette is one of those authors where you don’t have to read the summary to know it will be good or that you want to read it. Annette’s stories are like a bottle of wine they just get better with time.If you like historical novels with a lot of action and adventure set in the roaring twenties then you will love Where the Night Ends. I highly recommend Where the Night Ends and any of Annette’s other novels from Escaping From the Past Series to Surviving the Fatherland to Everything We Lose.

Where the Night Never Ends is a great read. I read an early copy of the book. It takes place during the prohibition era, through the young eyes of those that were less fortunate. This is the best of historical fiction. Most stories on this period center on crime and criminals like Al Capone, but fail to tell of the day to day struggle to survive for common folk. It was a very rough time. A homeless young woman, upon meeting a hobo navigates through starvation, hopping trains, begging for work, and horrible dilemmas with danger at every turn. How does one survive when every decision is between horrible choices? Oppenlander is a pro at getting the reader into the time period, as she has with her books like Escape From the Past series. You hear the noise of the streets, sense the smell of dumpster diving, feel the unbearable cold in the train cars and endure the drunken breath of bootleggers and unscrupulous cops. I was gripped from the beginning. The protagonists are compelling, fragile and brave. Each tells their own story as they become entangled and finally fall in love. I wondered if they would ever be safe or triumph. The ending has a wow factor worth waiting for. I recommend reading more of Oppenlander’s books if you like historical fiction.

Once again Annette Oppenlander gives us a poignant and involving story of young people caught up in a dangerous, tumultuous time in history. In her latest book Where the Night Never Ends, a penniless young woman in search of her brother teams up with a young hobo with a secret and together they encounter the many perils of Chicago in the Roaring Twenties and the Prohibition Era. I particularly like how Oppenlander fills the book with historic details and cultural conditions of the time and tells how her characters encounter and handle such conditions. This is no lightweight story. After her mother dies, the young protagonist is left with no family and no means of support; she faces a harsh, dangerous reality. She decides to go on her own to find her brother and encounters one terrifying difficulty after another along the way. Eventually, a young hobo helps her and the two of them journey to Chicago together.Struggling to survive--cold, hungry, no family or friends, begging for food, looking for work, surrounded by prostitution, bootlegging and corruption--the two young people survive through strength, courage hard work and the kindness of others. Overcoming and rising above impossible conditions, they also find love along the way.

Whenever a new novel of Annette Oppenlander's comes out, I know I am in for a terrific ride. Fasten your seat belts, dear reader, as this one is no exception! "Where the Night Never Ends," takes place in Prohibition Chicago. We careen along with our determined heroine, Sam Bruno, as she endures unbearable grief and deep abiding love. Even Al Capone has a cameo! In her inimitable style, Oppenlander draws readers in to the hearts of her characters and the times in which they lived. I am such a fan!Where are you taking us next, Mrs. Oppenlander?
