I have been a follower of Niamh Murphy for some time, but I think this epic lesbian fantasy, first in a trilogy, is her best work yet. It is a tale of love, death, arduous journeys, a gathering army, dragons, wizards, and different races such as Druids and Elves, as well as the intriguing non-gender specific Fenners. All done in a fresh way. Dragons are considered Gods and Guardians of the people until they mysteriously turn malevolent and destructive to all life. Breanna, a young Wealderling woman, becomes the possible to key to finding the answer to the change. Olwen, a Druid, is a mix of good intentions toward restoring the place of her race and righting societal injustices, and on the other hand leading open rebellion, power seeking, and acts bordering on evil. She is a multifaceted character that I had a love-hate relationship with. Her lover Andra, a capable warrior, is loyal but conflicted, and becomes complicit in Olwen's actions. There is no clear good vs evil in these characters; they are marvelously complex. The magic system is well explained, which I liked very much. Murphy is a master of pacing and suspense - the story never lags and works up to a stunning and beautifully written climax. I absolutely could not stop reading. I can't wait for Book 2. The previous shorter work Dragon Essence gives more background to the story and is recommended too.

I preordered this and was waiting patiently (maybe not so much) for this. I was so excited when it was already there when I went to work that morning. I wasn't disappointed. I read Dragon Essence first which gave me some back ground on Andra and Olwen. I think if I hadn't, I may have just put them in the antagonist category when I read this. I would definitely recommend it first although you don't have to read it to understand Dragon Whisper.I love fantasy books and this was a good one. Olwen can turn the dragons, unwillingly, against the people that worship them, but Breanna, unknown to her, has the power to stop this. Breanna and others from different peoples start a trek to find a wizard that might help them stop this.

Be sure to read the short prequel otherwise an important part of the story will be missing. I am looking forward to the rear of the books to see the tail unwind.

Not quite enough character development for the start of series.

Niamh Murphy has knocked storytelling out of the ball park with Dragon Whisper. Her prequel, Dragon Essence, is an exciting introduction to Andra, Olwen, Myrddym, & the White Dragon.Wordsmithing at its finest. Niamh creates the people groups of the woodlands, marshlands, lands of the Elves and Druids without being lost in their descriptions. Breanna, the main character at 17, has to grow up quickly; not understanding the terror for which she's become knowledgeable.The characters are realistically flawed, reluctant travelers on a quest to find an answer to why the dragons are on a rampage.I've not enjoyed anticipating a trilogy since I've read Tolkein's Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.I recommend anyone reading this review should read this book; and the prequel, Dragon Essence.Well done Miss Murphy, well done!

What a story!!! Niamh Murphy has once again proven herself to be one of my favorite authors. This story has a depth of plot and such fascinating characters that I found myself completely immersed. Eleven cities, mysterious marshlands, and lands lost provide the setting for a story in the vein of classic epic fantasies. The best part about this book is that no one character, even the “antagonists,” is one dimensional. I can’t wait to see what is next for our band of heroes, especially Breanna and Leasha ;)

Beautifully written. The author takes us smoothly from one group of beings to the next. The main characters are well developed and come alive in the pages. I am not sure how I will be able to patiently wait for the next two books. I love falling into a world of dragons and magic. My imagination is free to wander and Niamh Murphy leads it down all the right paths with just the right amount of twists and turns.

An intriguing read about finding your place in the world and overcoming inner doubts. I liked the characters and the interaction between them. Monsters are not always monsters. Sometimes they are victims.
