This book is valuable for putting the Trail and its travellers into historical context (a context that many of us ignored as we travelled), for creating subtopics that allow discussions of the experience to go beyond mere nostalgia, and for creating an information base for further exploration. Someone had to be the first, and Sharif Gemie and Brian Ireland have risen to the challenge with this insightful 2018 imprint of the Manchester University Press. When you finish reading the book, you will realize just how difficult it is to capture what so many people felt was effervescent. The book also creates platforms about which arguments will develop: such as, were we “travellers†or “tourists� As much as I chaffed at the chapter titles, I came to appreciate them as topics or platforms around which the Trail can be appreciated. The book is based on interviews with 80 travellers (most of them British), more printed books than I would have guessed existed, and a plethora of internet locations (some of which I find myself adding to). There are several passages in the book from these sources, but I have found that consulting the sources directly gives a vitality to my understanding that an academically oriented text does not. Also the web can include photographs much more cheaply than a book. Another volume might address how travellers reacted to their adventures in direct personal or professional ways; that is, how the experience of the Hippie Trail affect us? You know, we took the Hippie Trail—so what?
Loving reading this. Gives a great detailed insight into why and who the trail inspired to explore and experience the journey under very often difficult but rewarding adventures. Brings back fond memories of one of the best periods of a bygone era.
