I'm new to the CASA program, and I understand regulations differ by state, but I felt Ms. Courter's actions and attitudes often fell into the what-not-to-do category: 1. She is often dramatically confrontational with CPS, 2. She makes promises to the children that she can't keep, 3. She sometimes bases her position on what the child wants (the role of the child's attorney, not the CASA/GAL whose job is to determine what is in the best interest of the child). 4. She witnesses abuse and doesn't report it (or at least leaves that out of the book). 5. She transports the children and gives them gifts (might be okay in Florida). (She lives in Florida, not Texas like some other reviews say.)I did get some useful perspectives from her accounts, but I could have done without the extremely detailed and graphic depictions of child sexual abuse. Not sure if I would recommend it.

This book gave me a greater understanding of how inept and incompetent CPS (Texas) truly is. On all the legal papers CPS files with the courts, 'IN THE INTEREST OF THE CHILDREN' is on the heading. That is not the case. Until my Grandons' CASA GAL showed up on the scene, they as well as my husband and I were in living hell. One visit from our GAL and life has changed for all of us. This book gave me a deeper understanding of how broken the "system" really is and how important CASA GAL's truly are for the children.This book was an eye opener for me. I just thought our case workers were lazy an incompetent. Seems to be the norm.

This book tells it like it is. More people need to read this book and realize these children can't help themselves without outside help of people who care and stand up or them. I praise Gay for writing this book and for all that she does....

As I begin my training as a guardian ad Liten, this book prepared me for what I am about to embark on, and the impact I can have. Reading it gave me perspective and the belief that I, even i, can have an impact. The stories brought home something that was, for me, invisible, in the background, hidden. Now, understanding the plights of even these few children, I know that it will take people standing up for them nd loving them one by one, day by day, and I look forward to being a part of that. Gay has inspired me.

I could not put this book down, or my Kindle, rather. I have been wanting to become a CASA for some time now and wanted to learn more about what it all entails. I found this book as I was searching for any information about being a CASA and I am so glad I did. I think Gay Courter and her family, husband and sons, are wonderful people with a big heart. As soon as I finished this book I bought Gay's adopted daughter's book and I really recommend that one, as well.

GREAT condition and FAST shipping!! HIGHLY recommend!! Be a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) to help and protect children in foster care while their case is still open. Good reference book written by a single gay father who lovingly wanted to adopt a boy available for adoption.

I read this book for my Child Welfare class and wow is it amazing. I love it touches on some of the topics we see in the Child Welfare system, if you plan on doing social work, or you are a social worker, you’d definitely enjoy reading this book

Reading this will make you want to become a Guardian-Ad-Litem; you've been warned! ;*)Gay is a good story-teller & enlightens the reader on the desperate need for this program. (not to mention--more workers)I plan on getting this in hardback, and leaving my paperback-copy where concerned citizens can find it...
