Review

You’re Getting a Baby Sister! Sheila Sweeny Higginson, illus. by Sam Williams. Little Simon, $7.99 (24p) ISBN 978-1-4424-2050-2  With sensitivity and humor, Higginson gives prospective older siblings the scoop on what to expect from the new bundle of joy: “Baby sisters are darling./ Baby sisters are cute./ But don’t let her looks fool you—/ because here is the truth.” Williams’s gentle pastel palette depicts families celebrating the arrival of their baby girls; the expressions on the older siblings’ faces show mixed emotions. Little sisters drool, smell, scream, and break toys (“the ones you love too”), concedes Higginson. But there is a silver lining: “You can be her first teacher—/ show her things that you know./ Give her patience and love—/ she’s just starting to grow.” It’s a pitch-perfect primer that reminds readers of the upsides of being a big brother or sister, without minimizing or trivializing those less-than-wonderful moments. Available simultaneously: You’re Getting a Baby Brother! --Publishers Weekly, December 12, 2011, *STAR

I would have returned this book if it didn't cost almost as much as we spent on it to do so. The message in this book is EXTREMELY negative. It spends a LOT of time talking about the bad parts about having a sibling (like, she'll steal your toys and pull your hair), and, in my opinion, not nearly enough time focusing on the good parts, or even just generic facts, about having a sibling.

I was excited to get this book for my daughter who 2.5 and getting a new sister in 5 months, however it really takes a bit of a negative approach if you ask me - definitely not what I want to introduce right now! We are keeping it and putting it away as a tool to talk about things when little sister is a bit tough to handle (pulling hair, being mean?) ... my daughter got excited when she was sisters on the cover and then said "she's sad!" ... that gives you an idea of how a toddler interprets this, lol! Not ideal for introducing the concept of sister in my opinion!

Not a terrible sibling book, but I wouldn’t read this too often prior to new baby’s arrival. It starts of sweet, but gets negative quick and for too long. I could understand if 1-2 pages were about some simple negatives (as pictured in the ad for the book), but it goes on for quite a large chunk of the book. I think this would be better when the new sister is already here and perhaps annoying the older child (big brother in my child’s case) to help them cope/understand, but even then wouldn’t read it often.I really do like the last page though where you can write the new sister’s name and put a photo once she arrives :)

The illustrations and construction quality of this book is excellent, but I'm not thrilled with the gist of the content. Until the last two pages, the book describes how the older sibling will have to tolerate all the annoying realities of the new baby. I suppose the description is realistic, and perhaps necessary.I would not want this to be the first or only book to read to a soon-to-be big sibling, especially if s/he is already upset about a new baby on the way. On the flip side, if the older sibling is unrealistically excited about having a new best friend to play with, this might be the best book to start with.I just talked myself into upping my rating to 4 stars. Just be aware of how this book will play into the attitude of your new older child.

For anyone wondering, there is a wide variety of sibling pairs inside the book. Since my family is african american I was hoping it would have some diversity and was very impressed. It's also got some big sister/little sister pairs as well as big brother/little sister as shown on the cover which I was glad for since we have all girls :)Cute and relatable, my 3 and 4 year olds have been helping my 1 year old read up, lots of laughter at the little sister antics in the book.

This is a great book that prepares an older sibling for what their new baby sister can and can't do. It gives them fair warning that the baby will be messy and needy in a gentle way and also acknowledges that they are just as special and can help teach the baby new things. This book has been enjoyed by my three year old son.

My son loved this book while waiting for baby sister and still does! I ordered it for my nephew as he waits for HIS new baby sister :) I love the section in the back to add a photo of sibling and sister.

I purchased this for my oldest daughter (4yo) when I knew I was having another girl. We read it almost every night leading up to her being an official big sister. I love how real it is, and feel like it prepared us both for some of the less than perfect moments with a new little in the house. I’m excited to print a picture of both of my girls to add to the end of the book!
