I began reading VC Andrews after watching the first Flowers in the Attic movie back in the late 80s. I stayed with the series up till around the Gemini Series which was admittedly too long to stay with the newer books and only occasionally looked at the books in the store to skim through them and put them back on the shelf. The excitement over a new VC Andrews novel had waned due to the poor plots, or lack of interesting plots, and the psychological aspects were now psych 101 as if the gist of a disorder was taken from a Wiki definition and ran with it, just taking the surface material and not delving further. There were no compelling characters, character growth was non-existent and there were no villains that you loved to hate and by the end of the newer books you wished everyone would be killed off for their stupidity for they acted like SIMS running amuck. The lead female characters greatest life changing problems amounted to dealing with a hang nail and acting as if they were in the fifties despite the novels being set in current era time line. VC Andrews said once in a rare interview she drew ideas, inspiration from the world around her, of the horrible things that people did to each other she read or saw in the news. Maybe the editors and writer(s) of the newer books should be wise to take that as a layout to base these newer novels on for with shows like 13 Reasons Why, Pretty Little Lairs, Stranger Things, Desperate Housewives have that Gothic (modern) element that was present in the original works of VC Andrews. I don’t know many teen girls that act as the female characters do in these newer novels. Teen girls now are more street wise and aware of sex and sexuality due to it being more front and center than ever before and easily accessible through the net and I think again VC Andrews would have shown this instead of staying with the mode of ignorance nativity that has ran its course through these newer novels. Even the male characters within the books are about as interesting as wet cardboard and laughable as the put downs and insults they use are like “really? That’s the best you could write up?” as a put down? I’ve heard far worse said in public and social media documents how teens treat each other and what they say to cut to the bone.All that said, if you have read the Landry series, this is basically a rewrite of Giselle and Ruby along the lines of a “What If…” they had grown up together. There is nothing interesting or shocking from Prelude to Chapter 13 and they should have started out with Chapter 14 as the beginning and worked from there with flashback chapters into the lives of Haylee and Kaylee. The summary on the book leads you to believe that any punishment they receive will be some dark form of torture but no. As with most of the newer books the summary is far more interesting than what is between the covers and the fate of one of the twins reads like an ABC After School Special on the dangers of the Internet and it’s only with Chapter 14 that things get somewhat interesting but it’s the last chapter and a cliffhanger leading to the next book in the series. Just read Chapter 14 in the bookstore and save your money.There was a promising idea there that died somewhere from the conception of it to what was eventually written down.If they are intent on keeping the girls in a fifties mode of thinking and behavior? Set the books in that era, not in the modern era.The once descriptive narrative that pulled you in is gone. It’s like a thesaurus was pulled out and every synonym pulled to write a line or a paragraph and some things the adults say has you side eying what editor allowed that get by.In closing, VC Andrews invested herself into her work, into her characters. She experienced what they experienced, suffered along with them to make you feel emotions while reading, to pull you into the lives of these characters. The only ones suffering here are the readers and the only thing forbidden should be the company, forbidden from putting out novels like this under her name.

Good but reminded me too much toward the end of the twin rivalry Giselle had for Ruby in their series.

Horrible, boring, repetitive book. I gave up.

I LOVE and read all VC Andrews books but I found this one really hard to get into.

Good good book but not like the originals by VC Andrews which had more of a mystery base , but I will be reading the next book in the series .

Wasn't sure about it at first, it started out slow and then picked up! I really didn't like how this book ended. It left too much for the imagination.

It was a good read. There was a lot of repeating the first half of the book but really enjoyed where the story went in the end. I just wished it had got there sooner and had more of that suspense. Hopefully that's what book 2 will do. Overall it is definitely what you would expect from VCA.

the story kept skipping around and I couldn't keep up with the characters.
