I have not read this book in it's entirety, but on page 9 it states:"What is so clear from even a cursory observation of the business practices of American health insurers is that not only do they charge higher premiums to those with health-care problems, sometimes they make the premiums so punitive that those "sick" people won't (or can't) buy their product at all."This is blatantly false. An ACA (Obamacare) compliant health insurer CAN NOT CHARGE HIGHER PREMIUMS based on the health of an individual. An individual with health-care problems will pay the same rate as someone who has no health-care problems. Premium is based primarily on age, zip code, and smoker/non-smoker. In fact, there are no questions on the application about a person's past or present health.In addition, he continues to exaggerate and misinform in the same paragraph.I purchased this book because I was impressed by the author's background, premise, and editorials. I was hopeful that Dr. Jarvis might offer some insight and answers to the problems that American health care faces, and he may. As I stated, I have not completed the book. But to begin early on with such a gross misstatement of the facts makes me wonder if the rest of the book is worth the effort and time, and if Dr. Jarvis's agenda is his own personal enrichment. If you are going to argue for change, please make your argument based on the facts. Very disapointing!
Worthwhile and easier to read than the average public policy book. The author shares interesting stories from his experiences in public health administration and ties them to general policy analysis and recommendations. Throughout the book, and more particularly in the second half, there are persuasive arguments for why health care is not efficiently delivered when treated as a market commodity. The last chapter is full of great suggestions for ways to improve the funding and delivery of health care in the US.
Great Book! An honest take on our healthcare system. Not stodgy like so many economic texts on the subject. A real life look with twists and turns from prostitution in Nevada to real life population outbreaks. At the end of the journey, you’ll see our health system for what it is first hand and be inspired to fix it.
This book is an education in our dysfunctional health care system that's profits from illness instead of wellness or prevention of disease
Remarkably readable and insightful
I like how the author uses stories to illustrate points and make everything interesting and understandable. I knew our health care system was broken, but I honestly didn't know how much until I read this. And the Dr. Jarvis proposes a great solution that I hope politicians listen to! I loved this book and I hope that everyone reads it and I hope we can start making some positive changes!
If you’re worried about your family’s healthcare, get this book. Dr. Jarvis does a great job diagnosing what’s wrong and how to heal what has become a personal and national crisis.
Easy read, lots of information, it points out some serious absurdities that we have in America, ones which we are digging in and standing on. Be informed, it's important to get your information from multiple sources, not just the ones that jive with your feelings.
