This is my third Brian Haig (Sean Drummond) novel. Based on criteria of page by page interest and looking forward to the next one, they deserve my 5 star rating. As examples of fine writing probably middle of the road. I do find that I like to let some time lapse between books since some patterns are repetitive and I enjoy them more with time forget the pattern a bit. Two special points. It took until this last book to make the connection between the author Brian Haig and his father, the well known Alexander Haig. And this may in part account for connection of plots to real world events.
I am working my way down the list and, so far, Haig's first book is the best; that's not usually the case. A constant problem (and I've told the author so on his website) is the hero's constant compulsive need to make wisecracks and jokes. To me this is out of character with the type of person who had his pre-law military career; it seems immature and superficial but I can live with it.But ... 5 months in a Siberian prison? The plot here was very hard to follow while also seeming superficial. There were lots of logic holes. I will stay with him but look for him to equal his first book.PS: on his website he says his editors feel his books are not selling well--I suggest he communicate his hero's independent spirit in other ways and show more frequent glimpses of his former military prowess, ie more physical action.
Although this is a very good read, it was not one of my favourite. Still, given my respect for this author's books, I am glad I read it. Haig is excellent author, once I read one of his books, I then have read nearly all. He develops his plot and characters with great thought and continuity from book to book. The plots are always relavent to headlines but presented to the reader with a personal twist. I strongly reccommend his books to any who wish to read deeper behind what we have heard about in headlines of the world and it's somewhat secretive dealings and relations.
This tale continues Brian Haig's series of thrillers that feature Major Sean Drummond, a loud-mouthed, know-it-all attorney in the US Army. The nice thing about the story is that Haig succeeds in giving us an engrossing plot and plenty of action despite his central character. In this story, Drummond has the assignment of defending Brigadier General William Morrison against charges of spying for Russia. Morrison, who is even more obnoxious than Drummond, claims that he is innocent, and the huge amount of evidence against him suggests that he may be, or we wouldn't have much of a story, but Drummond must prove it. He enlists the aid of Katrina Mazorski, a Russian-speaking, civilian attorney, and they go to work on the evidence against General Morrison. It soon becomes clear that someone does not want them to investigate too deeply and is willing to kill them to prevent it. From here on, the story becomes increasingly exciting and reaches an unexpected, but satisfying, climax. The book kept me fascinated during a long, uncomfortable airplane ride, and is well worth reading.
Spy world, twists turns and deception, matched up against real world twists, turns and deception. Some of it exactly like you would expect your friends to react and some of it showing why the rich and powerful are exactly the same as us but think and act very differently.
Brian Haig is an excellent writer and I'm constantly looking for new work done by him. I especially enjoy his Jag character, Sean Drummond, who is witty and sarcastic but honorable and just. I've also listened to the audible cassettes and downloads which are brilliantly narrated by Scott Brick. The writing by Brian Haig coupled with the narration of Scott Brick can't be beat. You will not be disappointed.
I loved The Kingmaker. I have gotten to be a great fan of Brian's and Major Drummond too. This book flowed from the first chapter through to the end. I immediately downloaded the next one...Private Sector and am now reading The President's Assassin.After Vince Flynn passed away last year and then Tom Clancy I accidentally found Brian Haig. I am a fan now for the long haul and just hope he can write a book a week to keep up with me...(I am trying to slow down so he can keep up) ha.Keep up the good work.z
I enjoyed the smart-alecky-ness of the first-person narrator of this book. It reminded me in a vague way of Archie Goodwin, from the Nero Wolfe series. Sean Drummond doesn't suffer fools gladly, is able to spot them quickly and never hesitates to evicerate them -- verbally, that is. The author is able to pull off a very tricky proposition -- make you root for an underdog who is not a likeable guy. The plot and the people are complicated, and the wind-up is satisfying. I'm looking foward to reading more books in the series.
